Assignment 5: Summary Writing

Well... I chose this article because I really love the music and I think is very important to know about it. As I said in my past oral test, the music is a very useful therapeutic element, so I have seen a lot of utilities in my short life as a Occupational therapist student, and now this article is a scientist evidence about the effects o music in the persons development.
Here is the link of the original article

Summary

Title:
First Evidence That Musical Training Affects Brain Development In Young Children
(article published on September 20, 2006)

A Canadian research team after doing some test in musically trained children compared with untrained children and analyzing their MEG (magnetoencephalography) and their cerebral functions, have found that there are differences in their cerebral development. The first group have improved many cognitive skills like attention and especially memory comparing the other group.

The study was done in McMaster University in canadá and published on September of 2006. The researchers found 6 children starting music lessons after school with Suzuki method, without to taking into account their musical talents, and 6 children like control group who had no music lessons after school.

An explanation of the difference in the cerebral development is that the music have influence on sensory and motor activities causing changes in the cerebral cortex and even their electrical conduction, that was faster in their brains.

The most interesting thing of the study is that the children with early musical training not only improve listening skills, but also other skills not related to music like memory and attention, visiospatial processing, verbal and mathematical abilities, etc., so a good suggestion is that music lessons should be included in schools, especially for the youngest children.

Assignment 6?: Interesting Career-Related Topics

What career-related subject or topic have you been working on or studying this term?

I always have been very shy, specially when there are situations where you must try to be an extroverted person, like talking to a lot of people, acting or doing amused things. I can't explain exactly what I feel when I have to face up to this situations or why I feel like this, but I know that it has brought to me a lot of problems in my self-esteem, in my social life, and other areas. For example, I think I can't dance because a feel ashamed of my self but I have discovered other thing that probably affects me: I have problems with the imitation of motor exercises. I'm very clumsy trying it.

Why all this introduction?

Because this term we have been learning about Corporal Expression, and this has helped to me to understand a lot of things about my self and other persons.
It's good to know that you can improve this abilities even thinking you don't have theme. It's a hard work with shy persons like me, but is completely possible. But you haven't to forget that you must want to do it to get a develop in this area.
The corporal expression is a very good tool for the Occupational Therapy because you can work specially with groups, for example, with different activities you can obtain that the users know each other, have a good time, make friends, and develop social skills at the same time they develop other abilities like motor coordination, self-esteem, creativity, etc.

Assignment 3: Your Weekend

What exciting things did you do this past weekend?

The last weekend was quite different from the others because we had a "spiritual retreat" with the youth of the church.

There is a group of persons in the church that works with the young people (between 13-25 years old) of it. One of the persons of this group its me. So we organized a spiritual retreat to take care of some of the worries, doubts, and spiritual necessities of this young people.
The Redes's spiritual retreat (as we call the youth of the church including the leaders) was in a big place in la Florida, and there were a lot of trees and tennis, volley and football courts... It's a nice place
Well, it was a really wonderful time. I could know a lot of new people and talk with them about their problems, play football, and try to know them in different contexts.
We celebrated worship meetings/reunions where we sang worship songs and read the bible.
The Retreat lasted 3 days. In this 3 days I learn a lot about thinks that I didn't know about me. It was a discovery to know that I have other special abilities...
I'm very grateful for everything; for my friends, for the good job that they have done, for the new people that I could know, for the grate time lived there, and mainly for the God's hand that lead all that happened there.
Thank you God for everything.

Assignment 2: Recommended Websites in my Area

Today´s journal question is:
How did you become interested in your area of study? What motivates you to continue learning about your career?

When I was studying at school I didn't know my career, but I knew that I wanted to work in health area and I liked it. First I wanted to become a doctor, because I didn't knew other way to help the people in this area, and didn't know very well other careers that be alike.
Thinking about what kind of help did I wanted to give to people I realized that it wasn't necessary to do big things like saving persons lives, but doing other kind of things that help to them to keep living even though they become handicapped, because is too difficult to live with the consequences of an accident, for example.
Saving a person life is not enough because with all the problems they may have later, their lives are going to get very hard and in many times they don't want to live any more.
There are many ways to help the people from the occupational therapy, and this is one of the reasons I have to learn more things about my career, because if I become a good Occupational therapist I will have more tools to do well my job and give to the people a good help.

If you want to know what is the Occupational Therapy, you can visit

Assignment 1:English Song

What is an English song that you like?

No much time ago I found in my house a CD that I haven't seen before. I had the curiosity to know what the CD was about so I put it on the radio and the music started to sound. This is how I knew the song. Someone had compiled a lot of styles of very good Christian music for my sister and the song was almost in the end of the CD. I don't know who gaves this present to my sister, but I'm grateful too.
The song started whith piano so that liked to me from the begining. All the songs of the CD were in english so I didn't understand the lyrics (now I can), but to my surprise I understood the song!!!
The song is called "Who am I"

Who am I
I
Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart
.
Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You're
.
Chorus:
I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
And You've told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours
.
II
Who Am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love and watch me rise again
Who Am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me
.
Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You're
.
Chorus: I am...
.
Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear
'Cause I am Yours
I am Yours
Who am I

(The song begins at 4:35 minutes from the last video)

what is something you should throw away, but can't?

I have collected a lot of things for many time, since I was a child. The problem is that many of this things are totally useless, specially for the rest of my family. They always tell me I should throw away some of this things, but I can't do it because this things mean something for me, maybe in the past.
Other problem is that the things make all the house messy! There are little things all over the house, in every drawer, table, chair...
One of the reasons of keeping this things is that I can use them if I need them for doing works, or handicraft (specially if you're a occupational therapist), or anything.
